Basic Interface and Game Tutorial

League of Legends is a game that is, on the surface, very simple. Pick a champion and destroy or capture the objectives, and do this before the opposing team does. Sounds simple enough, but the execution of this simple game can be very challenging and sometimes frustrating. With four different game modes and over 100 champions to choose from even trying to get started can be daunting, so where do you begin?

Pre-Game Choices

Before you even get into a game the decisions you make (or don't make) can vastly effect the outcome of a future game. There are three crucial things to consider before deciding what game mode you want to play. They are what runes, masteries, and champions you have at your disposal.


Runes are buffs that are purchased in the in-game store and provide a stat bonus too your champion. They can effect anything from the value of a defensive stat too increasing the passive regeneration of your energy each time you level up. Let's break down the four different subtypes of rune:

  • Marks: Marks tend to provide a greater bonus too the offensive capabilities of champions, they are read in color and you will have 9 mark slots by level 30.
  • Seals: Seals tend to be more geared towards increasing the stats for caster champions, they also have the greatest potential for increasing armor, they are yellow in color and you will have 9 seal slots at level 30.
  • Glyphs: Glyphs tend to grant stats the help physical champions, the also have the greatest potential for increasing magic resist. They are blue in color and 9 glyph slots are unlocked by level 30.
  • Quintessences: Are a special type of rune, you will only have 3 slots at level 30 (they unlock at level 10, 20, 30) and they can be slotted with nearly any stat. They provide a far greater bonus too a stat then a normal rune.

Runes most heavily effect the portion of the game known as the early game, this is because small statistical advantages early game are much more noticeable before anyone has a significant number of items. While it may seem like
